GRAND CENTRAL STATION
I love living in a retirement community where I don't have to mow grass or shovel snow. Most of the residents' needs are provided for and there are all kinds of activities designed to keep their bodies and brains healthy.
Unfortunately there are sometimes when the days are filled with unplanned-for activity that impinges on one's desire for rest. One such day was Thursday. December 16th, 2021. (Yesterday!)
"Oy! Solch ein Tag!"
The day proceeded as follows:
08:00 AM. Alexa woke me up.
08:15 AM. Sarah from Maintenance called to warn me that workmen would be invading my house to install a new humidifier.
08:30 AM. Several masked workmen arrived and spent the next seven hours making clunks and booms as they installed the new appliance in the furnace room in the attached garage.
10:00 AM. The Security Officer brought in a young man who installed and tested a new alarm system.
10:30 AM. I missed the monthly meeting of the food committee, of which, I am a member.
10:30 AM. I missed the monthly meeting of the Genealogy Group, of which, I am a loyal member.
(How I could have attended both meetings at the same time, I'm not sure.)
10:45 AM. I phoned in a supper order for the Bistro.
11:00 AM. The food people called to say that the Bistro was closed, and we would have to get our evening meal another way.
Noon: My beautiful daughter, Diane offered to help us by picking up Chinese food for our supper.
(We ordered a PooPoo Platter and Egg Drop soup.)
02:PM. An installer checked our smoke detectors and tested them.
03:PM. A workman installed some more material for the new alert system.
05:00PM. Another workman installed six new pull-cord systems and tested them.
05:45PM. Daughter Diane brought us our delicious supper meal.
NOTE: While all of this was going on, these things happened:
We received 12 calls from "Unknown Caller." (Probably scams. We don't answer.)
We received 8 calls from callers at "valid-looking" addresses. (Probably soliciting funds. We don't answer unless we recognize the address.)
Several calls setting up a virtual Doctor's appointment.
An irritating set of squeaks and squawks coming from our clothes dryer that sound like a thousand crickets having a fight. These sounds recur at regular intervals that have the rhythm of:
"readin' and writin' and rithmatik
taught to the tune of a hickory stick..."
.......
Meanwhile, a wonderful thing happened at 08:30PM, Damien Ezra Fetzer was born to Bridget Vaughan Fetzer! A second grandson for my son, Chris, and a fifth Great Grandson for me!
