 EVEN  MORE  SCRAPBOOK  STUFF

I'm told that Proverbs 17:22 reads:

"A joyful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit dries up the bones."

Sounds OK to me.  Some of what I will be writing today may or may not be "good medicine," but I hope that it is interesting.

01.  Bad-Girl Barbie

Mattel took the doll with a butterfly tattoo (Butterfly Art Barbie) out of production after complaints from parents.  The "rad" new "Barb" was supposed to be the start of a line of "Generation Girl Barbie" dolls featuring tattoos, triple-pierced ears and nose studs.

02.  Raise for Seniors?

A cartoon from the 2000's shows a Social Security employee telling an elderly recipient about a "Windfall."  He smilingly says:

"Congratulations!  We're giving you a big raise, which should just about cover the increase in the cost of your health care premium."

A cartoon character from the 2021's would probably say the same thing, because the more things change, the more they remain the same.

03. Time re: Stephen Hawking

"You can think of ordinary, real time as a horizontal line... Early times are on the left, and late times are on the right. But you can also consider another direction of time, up and down the page.  This is the so-called imaginary direction of time, at right angles to real time.

The idea of imaginary time is...  an intellectual leap of the same order as believing that the world is round.  I think that imaginary time will come to seem as natural as a round earth does now. There are not many Flat Earthers left in the educated world."

Wow! Deep stuff!

04.  Shootings

Congressman Tom DeLay blamed school shooting on the separation of church and state.  He wanted to get God back in the classroom, and pushed the House to pass an amendment urging schools and government buildings to post the Ten Commandments. The effort "died" in Congress.

05.  Nice recipe?

Scoop ice cream onto a large piece of plastic wrap and cover securely with the wrap.

Use your hands to form large balls and freeze for three hours.

Roll in shredded coconut, chocolate shavings, mini white chocolate chips, or chopped nuts and return to the freezer until ready to serve.

(What do you think?)

06.  The Katzenjammer Kids

You might not be old enough to remember Hans and Fritz, the Katzenjammer Kids.  These were characters in Sunday comics sections of most newspapers.  They were always getting in trouble and I loved to follow their antics.

A fan, Sonia Reizes wrote: "The Katzenjammer Kids were not a wholly original creation.  (cartoonist) Rudolph Dirks based their appearance as well as their antics and mischief, on the work of Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908), the German master of rhyme and caricature.

Busch's 1865 series of verse tales, 'Max und Moritz', is the uncredited forerunner of New World cartoons and comic strips. ... Busch did not invent all of his naughty boys' pranks.  He lifted some of them from early-16th-century woodcuts illustrating the adventures of Till Eulenspiegel, the famous prankster of German folklore."

(I've mentioned before how Marcia Leary used to get me to do her ten-year-old bidding by offering me Felix the Cat comic books that never appeared. Like the dummy that I was, I told her that if she couldn't get me Felix, then she should get me the Katzenjammer Kids comics. Also... no shows.)

07.  Hot-Air  Dryers

Kevin Cowherd is irritated about those hot-air blowers in rest rooms. "... They work fine, if you have 20 minutes of your life to devote to drying your hands...  most people  wave their wet hands under the dryer for about 10 seconds. Then they dry their hands on their pants or shirt..

And... Do we really need the detailed set of instructions that so often accompany (these dryers)?

1. Press button.

2. Place wet hands under dryer.

3.  Hold until dry.

I've never seen anyone step up to a hot-air dryer, gaze at it quizzically, and remark: 'Whoa! What does this thing do?' "

08.  TIP  FROM  SANDY  CLAWS

Quicksand patches still exist in certain conditions throughout the world, where they look like the adjacent sand. If you step into quicksand, you should quickly lie flat on your back, arms outstretched as much as possible to distribute your weight.

Then slowly roll off the quicksand patch until you're sure the ground is firm enough to support your weight again.

.........................................................................

Go, and sink no more.
