Catchup.
I know, I should probably be concentrating on Dallas events. Instead, I will try to get your mind off events for a little while.
Art Today
Two California teenagers put a pair of eyeglasses on the floor of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and it immediately became an avant-garde exhibit. I think that this shows how low our art perception has become in this country. Andy W. probably got a great laugh over this.
Bravo, Henry!
Henry Heimlich, who created the maneuver that bears his name, saved a life by using the maneuver last week. Henry, aged 96, did what he advocated for so many years.. and helped someone live a while longer.
Watchit!
Wait Wait Don't Tell Me mentioned that Canadians are having fun throwing axes at local pubs. I guess darts had become too tame.
Money, Money!
The New York Times published an article about billionaires.... yes, I said, Billionaires!. There are a lot of them. Of course, Bill Gates, at $75 billion is the leader of the pack. Spanish retail giant, Amancio Ortega comes in second, with $74 billion. Rankings of others varies over the year. But we do know that Donald Trump is a piker in this regard... Bloomberg has him "pegged" at only $2.9 billion... Mr. Trump disputes this and says it is a "disgrace."
Republican Wisdom
The Week magazine reported in October 2015 the following, and I quote:
"... after Conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh declared that NASA's recent discovery of flowing water on Mars was likely part of an ongoing plot to advance a ''leftist agenda that has something to do with global warming."
Phrase Origins
Michael G. Williams mentioned how the following phrases got their notoriety:
o Turn a blind eye... during one of the many battles that Admiral Horatio Nelson was involved in, the fleet's flagship signaled for him to stop firing on a Dainsh vessel. However, Nelson refused. Instead, he put his telescope to his blind eye and declared, "I do not see the signal." So... the phrase began: to ignore something.
o Rub the wrong way.. Cats like to be rubbed from front to back (in the direction their hair falls.) So, when you pet them from back to front, it ruffles their fur and causes discomfort. So.. the phrase can be seen to relate to this.
o By and large.. In the old days, "large" referred to a ship sailing with the wind at its back. But, "by" meant that the ship was heading into the wind. So: the phrase puts the two words together and means you are going in any direction depending on the wind.. synonyms: "generally" or "for the most part."
.... enough for now?......
