Politics; Messiah?; Trump Claims; Lobster Love; SCOTUS Rulings

Catch up entry.

Politics or Religion?  Messiah?

From "Right Wing Watch"  Ann Coulter sez:  "Thank God, and I am not using the Lord's name in vain, I mean that absolutely literally, thank God for raising up Donald Trump and giving us a chance to save the country."

Truth in Politics?

PolitiFact.com reports on Trump's claims:

 6% mostly true
15% mostly false
43%  were false
18%  were "pants on fire"

 2% were true

Above and beyond the call of duty.

The Week magazine reports that a Canadian vegan bought a live lobster at a local supermarket and had it shipped 2,000 miles to be released off the coast of Nova Scotia.  (Let's hope it wasn't caught the next day by an insensitive lobsterman.)  That is wonderful, but I still love to eat lobster meat.

I read that 100 years ago, lobsters galore would wash ashore at low tide.  So many, in fact, that people in Maine stopped eating them and just used them for bait.... (for a while.)

SCOTUS

The Nation magazine outlined two recent Supreme Court decisions that were very significant:

Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt

In a vote of 5-3, the Justices struck down regulations contained in a Texas Abortion Law (HB2).  The law restricted women's access to abortions by requiring clinics to meet the very strict requirements of surgical centers, and requiring doctors to have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital.

Unfortunately, Texas legislators will no doubt come up with some other restrictive regulations.  Don't they realize that women will always get abortions if they feel they need them... by whatever means are available.... including (God help us) coathangers?

o Voisine v. United States

In a vote of 6-2, the justices ruled that domestic violence can be a misdemeanor crime, thereby prohibiting those who have committed domestic violence from possessing a firearm.  (Omar Mateen had a history of domestic violence!)  Another victory for women and gun control advocacy.

So, you see... SCOTUS can still function without a ninth member.  Let's hope that Mr. Trump does not become President and appoint unqualified justices..  ones who passed favorably on some of his 3,500 court suits.
