Sherlock Holmes; Consumers Reports; Selling It;

Nice and cool 80 degrees... pleasant.

Mr. Trump will not be supporting John McCaine or Speaker Ryan in their Primaries.  When are the Republicans going to realize that they have a nutball as a candidate and do something to drop him?

The World as it is

Sherlock Holmes spoke at the conclusion of the Cardboard Box as follows:

"What is the meaning of it, Watson?" said Holmes, solemnly, as he laid down the paper. "What object is served by this circle of misery and violence and fear?  It must tend to some end, or else our universe is ruled by chance, which is unthinkable.  But what end?  There is the great standing perennial problem to which human reason is as far from an answer as ever."

Consumers Reports

During the 1980's  the Consumers Reports had an end of magazine section called "Selling It" in which it drew attention to extreme "puffery" and out and out lies by manufacturers.  It also hit on misspelling and grammatical mistakes.  It was fun to read the entries.  However, in our current environment, we are used to misrepresentaions when it comes to company claims for their products.

One entry from 1980 read:   "... the real eye-opener comes from Japanese manufacturer Yamaha.  While perusing the assembly instruction for his new #Electric Grand keyboard, a reader found a diagram showing assorted pieces of hardware and labeled with a single  Anglo-Saxon work of instruction.  We can't repeat the instruction in this family magazine, but we believe the company meant 'screw.'"

Also, in the Consumers Reports mention of "new and indispensable" products:

o  Bazooka bubble gum in a tube that makes it look like toothpaste.

o  A $38 electric corkscrew from Norelco

o  A gadget called a Breathlight, which is a combination cigarette lighter and breath freshner.

Ritz designer cigarettes, with Yves St. Laurent's monogram.

Pint Pots candy, which tastes and smells like beer.
